The real theatre

The Pacific air war was shaped by distance, carriers, islands and weather. Aircraft flew over water, operated from crowded decks or rough coral strips, and suffered from salt, heat and humidity. This is one of the strongest theatres for visual contrast: Japanese carrier aircraft, US Navy blues and late-war worn finishes.

Pearl Harbor and early-war Japanese air power

The opening Japanese carrier attacks make the Zero, Kate and Val central subjects. Early-war Japanese aircraft need careful colour thinking, because IJN and IJAAF colours are not interchangeable and popular assumptions can lead to inaccurate finishes.

Midway — June 1942

Midway is a perfect modelling story because it centres on carrier operations and aircraft types with very different roles: Zero fighters, Kate torpedo bombers, Val dive bombers, SBD Dauntless dive bombers and US Navy fighters. It is a route for deck handling, worn walkways and maritime weathering.

Guadalcanal and island air war

Guadalcanal brings heat, dust, rough strips and intense operational pressure. Corsairs, Wildcats, Dauntlesses, Bettys and Zeros all fit the route. Aircraft can look faded and hard-used without needing exaggerated chipping everywhere.

Real mission / setting ideas

Carrier deck launch

Build a Zero, Dauntless, Hellcat or Avenger with deck wear and tie-down context.

Midway strike route

Pair an SBD Dauntless with Japanese carrier aircraft for a real historical comparison.

Island strip route

Use Corsair, Wildcat or Betty subjects with coral dust, sun fading and rough servicing.

Aircraft route

A6M Zero

The essential Japanese carrier fighter and a key route into IJN colour research.

F6F Hellcat

A powerful late-war US Navy contrast to the Zero.

F4U Corsair

Ideal for weathered blues, island bases and exhaust staining.

Open guide
SBD Dauntless / B5N Kate

Best for Midway, carrier strike and dive/torpedo bomber storytelling.

Paint and weathering route

Decide IJN vs IJAAF before choosing Japanese colours.
US Navy schemes move through blue-grey, tri-colour and Gloss Sea Blue.
Use salt fading, deck scuffs, exhaust staining and coral dust.
Avoid making every Japanese aircraft look stripped bare unless a specific photo supports it.

Display idea

A carrier deck section or coral-strip base gives Pacific aircraft immediate story value. Add tie-down points, deck stains, palm-edge terrain or pale dust depending on the subject.
