Fiat G.55 Centauro

G.55 Serie I / Sottoserie 0 / ANR routes · Italy · 1943–1945
Regia Aeronautica route with Stormo, Gruppo and Mediterranean theatre context

The Fiat G.55 Centauro was one of Italy’s finest wartime fighters: a powerful DB 605-powered interceptor with strong high-altitude performance and elegant late-war Italian lines. It served with the Regia Aeronautica and later the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana, defending northern Italy against Allied bombers. For modellers it means long inline-engine profile, German-influenced powerplant, Italian smoke-ring or disruptive camouflage, fasces or ANR markings, theatre bands, exhaust staining, paint fading and late-war airfield wear.

G.55 operations · 1943–1945

The Fiat G.55 Centauro arrived late but was one of the best Italian fighters of the war. It combined a DB 605-derived engine with heavy cannon armament and strong handling, then served through Italy’s complicated 1943 split between Regia Aeronautica and ANR routes. A good G.55 build starts with the exact operator: pre-armistice Regia Aeronautica, ANR northern Italy interceptor, experimental torpedo fighter route, Luftwaffe evaluation, or post-war/export reference subject.

Build difficulty and related guides

Overall difficulty

Medium-high. The airframe is clean, but camouflage and markings need care.

Camouflage difficulty

High. Smoke-ring and Italian mottle patterns need practice.

Marking difficulty

High. Operator/date errors are easy on G.55 subjects.
