G.55 operations · 1943–1945
The Fiat G.55 Centauro arrived late but was one of the best Italian fighters of the war. It combined a DB 605-derived engine with heavy cannon armament and strong handling, then served through Italy’s complicated 1943 split between Regia Aeronautica and ANR routes. A good G.55 build starts with the exact operator: pre-armistice Regia Aeronautica, ANR northern Italy interceptor, experimental torpedo fighter route, Luftwaffe evaluation, or post-war/export reference subject.

Role & strengths
- Italian high-performance fighter and bomber interceptor

- Italian smoke-ring, green/brown/grey disruptive schemes, ANR markings and theatre bands
- Late-war fading, exhaust staining, wing-root wear, airfield dust and restrained chipping
Key theatres
- Italian mainland interceptor route
- ANR northern Italy defence route
- Luftwaffe evaluation and captured/reference routes
- Post-war/export and survivor-reference routes

Survivor/reference today

G.55 references rely on survivors, restorations, post-war aircraft and period photos. Use them for shape and cockpit, but verify wartime camouflage and ANR/Regia markings separately.

Build this G.55 as…
Pick the operator first. Regia Aeronautica, ANR, Luftwaffe evaluation, torpedo prototype and post-war routes all need different markings.
Aircraft identity
Regia Aeronautica, ANR, Luftwaffe evaluation and post-war G.55s use different markings. Pick the aircraft before decals.
Italian smoke-ring and disruptive schemes need references. Do not use generic Luftwaffe or RAF colours.
Paint scheme cards
Classic late Italian route with sand/green smoke-ring or mottle finish.
ANR route with northern Italy interceptor context and late-war wear.
Captured/evaluation aircraft need exact markings and repaint checks.
Weather exhausts, wing roots, tyres, gun ports and belly grime logically.
Campaign cards
Pre-armistice Italian route with late Italian camouflage and fasces markings.
Late-war interceptor route with ANR markings and bomber-defence context.
Luftwaffe/evaluation route with non-standard marking checks.
Reference route for structure, cockpit and restoration details.
Build difficulty and related guides
Medium-high. The airframe is clean, but camouflage and markings need care.
High. Smoke-ring and Italian mottle patterns need practice.
