How to Choose Your First WW2 Aircraft Model Kit — Beginner Guide

Choosing your first WW2 aircraft kit is easier if you avoid overcomplicated subjects. Pick a good kit, a simple scheme and a subject you actually care about.

Start with 1/72 or 1/48

1/72 is cheaper, smaller and good for trying multiple aircraft. 1/48 is easier to handle and shows cockpit and surface detail better.

Good first subjects

Good first WW2 aircraft subjects include the Spitfire, Hurricane, P-51 Mustang, P-40, Bf 109, Fw 190 and Zero. Avoid complex multi-engine bombers until you have built a few single-engine aircraft.

Do not buy too much aftermarket

For a first kit, canopy masks are often more useful than a full cockpit upgrade. Good decals and masks help more than hidden resin parts.

Paint choices

Choose a scheme with two or three main colours. RAF Dark Green/Dark Earth, US Olive Drab/Neutral Grey or simple Luftwaffe greys are good starting points.

Simple finishing plan

  • Build cleanly.
  • Prime.
  • Paint the main scheme.
  • Gloss before decals.
  • Add a wash and light exhaust staining.
  • Seal with matt or satin varnish.
