I-16 operations · 1936–1943
The I-16 served from the Spanish Civil War through the opening years of the German-Soviet war. It was fast and modern when introduced, but by 1941 it was fighting newer Bf 109s under brutal frontline conditions. A good I-16 build starts with the route: Spanish Republican “Mosca”, Chinese service, pre-war Soviet VVS, Barbarossa green/blue fighter, winter whitewash aircraft or survivor/reference route.

Role & strengths
- Soviet VVS short-fuselage monoplane fighter with Spanish, Chinese and Eastern Front routes
- Spanish Civil War, China, Khalkhin Gol, Barbarossa, Moscow/Leningrad and winter-war routes
- Radial cowling, retractable gear, open cockpit variants, stubby fuselage and mixed surface textures
- AII/AMT green over blue, black-green disruptive, Spanish markings and winter whitewash options
- Dust, oil, chipped cowling panels, fabric fading, rough-field grime and winter streaking
Key theatres
- Spanish Civil War “Mosca” route
- Chinese and Khalkhin Gol routes
- Barbarossa / Eastern Front VVS route
- Winter whitewash and survivor-reference routes
Specification I-16 Type 24
Survivor/reference today

I-16 survivors and restorations are useful for the stubby shape, cockpit, gear and cowling, but wartime colours and Spanish/VVS markings still need period-photo checks.
