Vought SB2U Vindicator

SB2U-1 / SB2U-2 / SB2U-3 · US Navy & USMC · 1937–1942
USAAF / USN route with unit, theatre and markings context

The Vought SB2U Vindicator was the US Navy’s transitional monoplane scout bomber: modern-looking when introduced, but obsolete by the time Marine SB2U-3s fought at Midway. For modellers it is a distinctive early-war subject with fabric-covered rear fuselage, greenhouse canopy, external bomb crutch, pre-war or blue-grey/light-grey finishes, Marine island-base weathering and a strong Midway story.

SB2U operations · 1937–1942

The SB2U Vindicator sits between the colourful pre-war Navy and the desperate early Pacific War. It served from US carriers, trained Navy scout-bomber crews and, most famously, equipped Marine VMSB-241 at Midway. A good model starts with the route: clean pre-war carrier SB2U-1/2, early blue-grey Navy aircraft, or weathered Marine SB2U-3s on Midway with fading, dust and rough-field wear.
